Hanoi Tower 9 - Logic Puzzle

The infamous Towers of Hanoi Puzzle was first brought to public attention by mathematicians in 1883 and is still featured in popular culture and academic challenges today! The object is simple: move the entire stack of rings from one pole to another. However, there are two basic rules that make the challenge far more difficult. First, only one disc can be moved at a time. Second, a larger disc can never be placed on top of a smaller one. The discs vary in size and begin stacked from largest at the bottom to smallest at the top.

There are many interesting ways to approach the challenge, and once you figure it out, you can consider yourself an expert mathematician! Afterwards, try increasing or decreasing the difficulty by changing the number of rings. Every ring doubles the challenge. The minimum number of moves is 7 (3 rings), 15 (4 rings), 31 (5 rings), 63 (6 rings), 127 (7 rings), 255 (8 rings), and a remarkable 511 moves for the full 9-ring puzzle.

The sequence is:

• 4 rings: 15 moves
• 5 rings: 31 moves
• 6 rings: 63 moves
• 7 rings: 127 moves
• 8 rings: 255 moves
• 9 rings: 511 moves
