Separate It. Then Put It Back Together.
The Hanayama NEWS Cast Puzzle is a two-piece take-apart puzzle designed by legendary Japanese puzzle creator Nobuyuki Yoshigahara.
The objective is easy to understand: separate the two metal halves and then return them to their original position.
Understanding what allows them to separate is the real puzzle.
NEWS gives the solver very little visual information to work with. The two halves appear firmly locked together, and the exterior does not reveal the internal logic that controls their movement.
A Take-Apart Puzzle With a Hidden Mechanism
NEWS is a take-apart mechanical puzzle built around a concealed mechanism.
Unlike an interlocking puzzle where the relationship between the pieces can be studied from the outside, NEWS keeps the important information hidden. The solver has to experiment with the object, pay attention to how it behaves, and gradually form a theory about what might be happening internally.
Hanayama itself intentionally reveals very little about the mechanism because explaining it would give away part of the solution. store.hanayamatoys.co.jp
No force is required. The challenge is discovering the conditions that allow the two halves to release.

NEWS is a good example of the kind of mechanical puzzle where a very small object can contain a surprisingly deep problem. There are only two main pieces, but the limited information available to the solver makes separating them far less straightforward than the piece count suggests.
Taking It Apart Is Only Half the Challenge
Discovering how NEWS separates gives you an important understanding of the mechanism, but the puzzle is not finished until the two pieces are restored to their original configuration.
That second half of the challenge is part of what makes Hanayama puzzles so satisfying. The goal is not simply to get the pieces apart, but to understand the mechanism well enough to reverse the process.
A Compact Challenge for Experienced Solvers
Kubiya rates NEWS at 4/5 difficulty, making it better suited to solvers who already have some experience with mechanical puzzles.
It is particularly appealing for people who enjoy hidden mechanisms and puzzles where observation matters more than the number of pieces. Its compact cast-metal construction also makes it an easy puzzle to keep on a desk, carry with you, or hand to another solver once you have restored it.
